One area that is not clear when taking your horsebox out on the road is your licence classification and what you are allowed to drive legally. In this article we hope to bring a clear understanding for when you consider purchasing a new 3.5 tonne horsebox from us at Equestrivan.
What does your licence say?
The first point of call is to check your driving licence for the classes of vehicle you can drive. If you passed your car test after 1/1/97 you can drive a vehicle up to a gross weight of 3.5 tonne on a normal category B licence (private car licence). If the vehicle has a gross weight between 3.5 – 7.5 tonne the vehicle can only be driven by someone with a category C1 licence, and any driver that passed their test for a category B licence before 1/1/97 will automatically get entitlement to drive a C1 vehicle. Those drivers who passed their B licence after 1/1/97 will have to sit an additional test.
Is your horsebox overloaded?
Driving your horsebox over loaded is an offence with VOSA and the Police having the rights to escort you to a VOSA weighbridge to have the vehicle weighed. If you find your horsebox is overloaded many insurance companies will not cover you.
How to ensure you do not break the law
– Your horsebox is given a certificate which will show the gross vehicle weight in metric tonnes.
– To establish how much weight can be legally carried on a vehicle it should be taken to a VOSA weighing station.
– The weight taken by VOSA is described as the unladen weight, and in order to establish how much weight your vehicle can carry, the unladen weight should be deducted from the gross weight to give you a weight limit known as the payload.
– The payload is the amount the vehicle can legally carry without the concern of being overloaded.
It is essential when purchasing any vehicle for the purpose of transporting horses to check the payload and also take into consideration the weight of the horses, feed, water and tack, even a substantial payload can rapidly be exhausted.
